1981 Turbo Pace Car Trans Am
43,000 Original Miles
Sold
![]() This is a 1981 Trans Am Daytona 500 Pace Car with 43,241 Original, documented miles. It is a 1 of 2000 made that has the "Y85" and "AR9" option codes which appear on the cowl tag and original build sheet, plus tons of Original Paperwork. The Daytona 500 NASCAR option was coded "Y85" which called for the special two-toned black and white paint scheme, along with the black pin striping and NASCAR decals. The "AR9" option was the ONE YEAR ONLY famous Recaro red and black seats with the embroidered bird on the back seat and the door panels. All 2000 Daytona 500 NASCAR's came with Fisher t-tops, 301 turbo engine, air conditioning, white 7.5 inch turbo wheels, very rare red lighting gauge package and AM/FM seek/scan digital tuned cassette player. This was the last year in 1981 of the 2nd generation Trans Am in which only 33,492 were built which was the lowest amount of Trans Am's produced since 1975.
This car was bought at Capital Pontiac in North Carolina for the price tag of $14, 325. I have EXTENSIVE documentation on this car which included ALL paperwork at the time of delivery of this car. Original manuals, pre-delivery vehicle inspection, brochures on the radio/tires/fuel/warranty, maintenance schedule, build sheet, finance papers from the original owner, sales contract, original odometer mileage statement of 27 miles, service records and a rare copy of the computer test record. This is a southern car that spent it's existence in North Carolina and West Virginia. All of this documentation is organized in excellent condition covered in sheet protectors in a notebook. Also included is an ORIGINAL 1981 Daytona 500 program guide with the artwork of the T/A Pace Car pacing the field around the track and a DVD of the actual race.
![]() Vehicle Condition
This Trans Am Daytona 500 Pace Car NASCAR is in EXCELLENT condition.
The exterior of the car is near perfect. The paint does NOT have any scratches, door dings or flaws. This car has all of it's original body panels. The frame rails still wear their original white paint. There is NO rust damage anywhere. The decals and pin striping are perfect. The front grills and rear black-out lights are excellent. The white turbo wheels are immaculate. There is NEW weather stripping around the t-tops and doors. The chrome tail pipes are perfect.
The interior of this car is original and stunning. The Recaro seats are in awesome condition. The dash has NO cracks and looks like new. The console and aluminum shift bezel look like new. The carpet is very clean with NO rips, stains or tears. The headliner is NEW and perfect. The embroidered door panels have NO warping and look fantastic. All the gauges work including the clock! The air conditioning blows ICE COLD!!! It has all the original components and was just thoroughly serviced. This car has the rare, original AM/FM seek/scan digital tuned cassette player. It works perfectly and the car still has the factory Delco speakers. All of the interior lights, horn, wipers and turn signals work appropriately. The cruise control works, as well as, the power windows.
The 301 turbo engine has actual, documented 43,241 on it. I had the motor restored, NOT rebuilt. I spent over $1500 to have the motor and transmission removed from the car and totally restored with new paint, gaskets, filters, seals, fluids, etc... I had the carburetor rebuilt. I have extensive pictures documenting this entire process. I wanted to preserve the integrity and originality of this rare and beautiful Trans Am. The turbo works fine as well as the turbo lights on the hood. This car runs and shifts the way it did when it left the dealership in North Carolina.
The suspension of this car is like new. It has NEW rear leaf springs and shocks. The car rides so smooth, straight as an arrow and with NO squeaks or rattles. It is so tight for a 24 year old car. You have to drive it to believe it. The brakes were serviced and work fine. It still has the original exhaust and is in very good condition. The BF Goodrich tires are brand new.
The trunk is in great original condition with the original jack assembly, spare and canister. The t-top covers are fine. Also included are a pair of Recaro foam inserts in plastic bags with illustrated instructions to use for more lumbar support. How many of these Recaro lumbar inserts could be in existence?
It is extremely hard to find any fault with this car. The car has been well cared for it's entire life. It is covered and garaged kept 100% of the time. It may well be one of the nicest, well documented, original Daytona 500 Pace Car's in the country for a 43,241 mile car.
